Cam Newton released by Patriots; Mac Jones to start

Inquiring minds in the NFL world are speculating about what team he might sign with next

The New England Patriots have released veteran quarterback Cam Newton, tapping Mac Jones to take over the position.

Newton will now hit free agency, as reported by ESPN on Tuesday and inquiring minds in the sports world are speculating about which NFL team he might sign with.

Last summer, Newton, 32, inked a one-year contract with the Patriots. According to ESPN, “A source familiar with the Patriots’ thinking said the agreement with Newton was appealing to the team as a low-risk, high-reward situation, factoring in Newton’s health, a modest contract, and New England’s transition at quarterback without Brady.”

As theGRIO reported at the time, Newton took to his Instagram stories to celebrate the deal, writing, “I’m excited as I don’t know what right now!” along with the hashtag “#LETSgoPATS.”

In March 2020, when the Carolina Panthers changed ownership, they released Newton, who was the No. 1 overall selection in 2011 and took the Panthers to Super Bowl 50 in a losing effort in 2015. Newton appeared to make peace with the separation, posting on Instagram, “Learn to trust the journey, even when you don’t understand it.”

After news of his release from the Patriots, Newton posted, “I really appreciate all the love and support during this time but I must say … please don’t feel sorry for me. I’m good.”

Fans are now wondering where Cam will sign next? Others joked on Twitter that he’s going to be playing quarterback for the shady football program at Bishop Sycamore.

Bishop Sycamore is accused of duping a marketing agency into putting the alleged high school team on television. The football team from Ohio is suspected of lying its way into a game that was broadcast on ESPN, theGrio previously reported.

The match-up happened on Sunday when the elite IMG Academy took on a high school called Bishop Sycamore. As the game went on, Florida-based IMG — which is known as an incubator of Division 1 student-athletes and eventual NFL stars — decimated the lesser-known Ohio school, eventually winning 58-0.

Even while on air, commentators started to wonder how Bishop Sycamore got into this mess, and, as SB Nation reported, the story has “only got weirder from there.”

“Bishop Sycamore told us they had a number of Division 1 prospects on their roster. To be frank, a lot of that, we could not verify. They did not show up in our database; they did not show up in the databases of other recruiting services. So, okay, that’s what you’re telling us; fine, that’s how we take it in,” on-air commentator Anish Shroff said during the game.

Shroff later tweeted, “Sorry. They had no business being in that game today. None. I feel bad for the kids. Player health and safety were at risk today. It was uncomfortable for anyone who watched.”

Bishop Sycamore High is said to be an online-only school based out of Columbus, Ohio and their football team is reportedly made up of junior college players, not high school students. Further research into the school’s blog-like website revealed other questionable signs, according to the report, but the site has since been taken down completely.
